5 steps to success this September

Five steps to put you on the right track for an alarm screaming month from Jack Brown

Step 1

“Get on the Tigers! These nuts are an absolutely devastating bait for me at this time of year, either as a nice little ‘balanced’ hookbait or crushed up into a spod mix. They really do work wonders. As far as hookbaits are concerned, I like to core one or two out with the use of a drill and then plugging them with some cork to make them ultra balanced.”

Step 2

“Travelling light and being proactive always serves me well. Make the most of any stalking and floater fishing opportunities and upping sticks to move onto fish. Floater fishing for me is one of the most exciting aspects of carp fishing and with the British weather being as grim as it usually is, I like to make sure I make the most of any warm weather to try and tempt a few fish off the surface.”

Step 3

“Prepare some particles, my favourites in the main being hemp, buck wheat, grouts, tares and tigers. If you can get hold of a decent-sized Burco Boiler it really does make preparing particles a much easier process. It also prevents the chance of ruining your missus’ expensive pots and pans and stinking the house out.”

Step 4

“When fishing over beds of particle I like to bait-up as tight as I possibly can and take pride in doing so. Fishing all three rods, or however many I can fit onto the spot tight together with ultra accuracy. Take note of what the wind is doing, this will ultimately impair the accuracy of a spod in a heavy crosswind. Any undertow can also affect the descent of the bait through the water.”

Step 5

“Take your time when feature finding and make sure the spot you are fishing is exactly how you imagine it to be. I like to use a bare lead attached to a braid main line with zero stretch. This is combined with my spod rod, the stiffness of the spod rod really gives you a detailed feel for what your fishing over.”
