20 things you must do this summer

Four very different but very successful anglers on the subject of summer

Harry Charrington: Day ticket/match-style expert

“Do have a range of tactics at your disposal: baits for on the bottom, some Zig bits and surface fishing tackle. Secondly, find out how much weed is in front of you and how deep it is, this will allow you to make an informed decision on what rig to use and where to put it. ‘Do’ use lots of particles! Use oil – I add salmon oil to my pellets. Finally, make sure you have a pair of polarised sunglasses.”

Jim Wilson: Brilliant big fish angler

“Bait little-and-often as it will keep fish interested in your baited area. Use mixed size baits, plus chops to keep the fish guessing. Mix your baits – I currently fish a mix of Mainline Cell and Hybrid which again keeps them guessing. Add hemp, maize and tiger nuts to your baited area, this will attract different fish other than boilie munchers to the ‘buffet’. Add oils, such as hempseed oil to enhance the pulling power and form a ‘slick’.”

John Kneebone: Another brilliant big fish angler

“My five ‘do’s’ are all rolled into one tactic really: watch the water and then bait-up during the period showing the least carp activity. Reel in at this time and rest the swim to allow the fish to grow confident and feed. Remember: a confidently feeding carp is one that is easier to catch. In the meantime, use this ‘free time’ to go stalking or floater fishing – both really exciting methods in their own rights.”

Shaun Harrison: The most experienced angler on the panel

“I like to add a few particles to my summer baiting as like us, the carp appear to enjoy a little ‘salad’ during the warmer months. Always have polarised sunglasses to hand to break the surface glare and see through the water clearer. Always carry an emergency stalking and floater kit in the car. Always carry sun block and make sure you use it! I’m guilty of not using it enough. And finally, a selection of different mosquito repelling products.”
