10 things we miss about the noughties

Fitty calendars, Danny Smith, Camo and Hear’say (actually, we hated them)

1 No social media

Although we’re obsessed with our Facebook page (CARPology Magazine) and addicted to Instagram (carpologyofficial), we can’t help but miss those days when you found out all the angling news via the weekly mags and papers. There was nothing more exciting than picking up Carp-Talk on a Wednesday to see what had been caught and what new tackle was coming out.

2 Less mobile phones

Obviously around the latter stages of the decade the mobile industry was booming, but not to the extent it is now. As one big named angler told us some years back, “You can’t be secretive even if you want to be nowadays. Recently I’d just got a fish in the net when the phone went. “How big is it?” and this was from someone that wasn’t even on the lake!”

3 Money

Nothing else to add to that really.

4 Camo

If for nothing more than the jokes. Our two favourites coming from Pete Regan – “I went for a crap in the woods the other day. I was just doing the paperwork when the tree walked off!” and John Hannent’s, “I’ve just climbed Lee Jackson!”

5 Fitty of the Month calendars

It was your classic win-win situation: you got a decent calendar for 12-months and we got to stare at great norks for the day. Unfortunately though, nowadays no one’s got the budget to sponsor it. See, bloody money again!

6 Danny Smith

He’s the author of what is undoubtedly the best and most talked about series to ever be printed in CARPology; he caught a single, double, twenty, thirty and forty in one 12hrs in-session feature; and he’s caught the hardest looking carp of all time. Dan, where the hell are you?!

7 Ridiculous review tests

Remember when we lobbed a pod off a cliff and boiled and then froze a £300 reel?

8 Companies that have disappeared

They were good ones too: Carp-Tech, Carp Quest, Carp ‘R’ Us, Nevis, Fishrite… And don’t even get us started on the tackle front: Kryston’s Hawser Rig Resin, Nash Tackle’s Titanium banksticks and bars, ball pellets…

9 Having the time to go fishing

Well, that’s all changing from this month!
