Super flat, super compact

Open your arms and say hi to the world’s flattest, most compact bedchair: Chub’s new Outkast Flatbed

Chub are famous for lots of things. Heritage. Quality. Having a great line up of consultants. And most of all, bivvies and bedchairs. For decades now the Northern-based label has been producing luxury comfort for us all and that trend has continued in 2016 with the launch of this new bed which falls under the brand’s Outkast umbrella. It’s a premium bankside bed but one which comes with the best price tag we’ve seen on a bed of this calibre: a mere £139.99!

Flat as a pancake: Aside from having a completely level profile for the perfect night’s sleep, when packed away, the Flatbed is free standing in a closed position and no parts stick out – and that includes the enclosed sleeping bag you left in there. To use: simply unclip and unfold. Job done!
Tech spec: The Flatbed is packed with tech. Chub’s unique leg mechanism is dead easy to use: lift the lever, allow the leg to drop to the desired length, and then close the lever. There’s rotating mud feet and measures 197 (L) x 79cm (W) when open. Amazingly, although it’s made from a combination of aluminium and stainless steel, the Flatbed weights just 9.6kgs.
Quality - as you'd expect: Compact? Tick. Flat? Tick. Add in a thick, soft mesh central section mattress and hardwearing outer and you’ve got the ultimate in comfort and lightweight/compact design.

Named Flatbed – it’s exactly as its name suggests: flat – and is a bed that’s not only lush to sleep on, but still offers lightness and extreme levels of comfort.

The Outkast Flatbed measures an impressive 197(L) x 79cm(W)

Along with a thick padded mattress with extra strong comfortable mesh centre part, there’s also a comfortable shaped pillow

To achieve this lightness, Chub put this bed on a crash-diet, removing all the unnecessary flab and have managed to get it down to a mere 7.5kgs. So that figure makes some sense, most other bedchairs in this bracket weigh between 10kg and 12kgs. They then equipped it with Chub’s double-hinged technology which makes bulky locking cam wheels completely obsolete. The advantage this offers is two-fold. First it keeps the bed very compact and easy to transport with no annoying parts sticking out when it’s folded up. In fact, the Outkast Bed will completely house a thick winter sleeping bag (such as the company’s Cloud 9 Five Season Sleeping Bag) or any other layered-type bag) inside the bed when it’s folded up flat. The second is the bed will lay completely flat, meaning you get the perfect sleeping position.

The chunky leg locks, which are very easy to operate, offer complete stability

The smart folding design leaves plenty of room to leave your sleeping bag inside – and is held together by a single chunky clip

And there’s more tech. Chub have used their user-friendly, unique leg mechanism which is dead easy to use: lift the lever, allow the leg to drop to the desired length, and then close the lever. This, together with the fully padded mattress which features a super strong mesh central section to help reduce weight but not affect comfort, results in the ultimate when it comes to bankside sleeping on the cheap.

Chub have designed some classic products over the years, from the Cyfish bivvy to the Cloud 9 Sleeping Bag. Now they can add this most desirable, super comfortable, super cheap bedchair to their already impressive back catalogue.
