Should braid be banned?
Big opinions by key anglers on major events happening within carp fishing right now

The big question

We know that braided main lines provide much better bite indication but they are also potentially dangerous to the fish and should they be banned on more fisheries?

Mat Woods, Avid Carp

“I think the rule is a little nonsensical on many waters, as for any angler to even think about using braided main line, you’d expect them to have enough knowledge to use it safely. After all, it costs a darn sight more to spool up with braid than it does with mono. Is it really on Joe Average’s radar? I’d argue that braid is only as ‘potentially dangerous’ as any other reel line. Mono will bird’s nest just like braid and is just as hard for fish to free themselves of in a ‘trailer’ situation due to the inherent stretch.

“Also, what’s better fishing at range? 150yds of stretchy mono where you won’t find out about your take until it’s potentially too late, or 150yds of braid where you’ll know right away? So long as fisheries are vigilant and police their waters correctly, I don’t see why braid should be banned now or in the years to come.”

Lewis Read, Gardner Tackle

“There is no doubt braids offer a much high level of sensitivity due to the lack of stretch but you need to compensate and adjust your angling style for this and the effect this could potentially have on a fish’s mouth.

“There is also the very real possibility that the use of braid could be associated with some ‘unexplained’ lesions/cuts.

“There are obviously some major benefits to using this type of product but where do we consider the possible risks nullify or override the benefits? To my mind this really limits the use for some very specialised (long-range) applications and by those that are experienced enough to understand and compensate for the braided main lines different characteristics.”
