Step-by-step guide to the Blowback Rig

Regarded as one of the most efficient bottom bait presentations around...

1. Here’s the bits and pieces you need: a long shank hook, coated braid and pre-formed Hook Aligners.

2. Skinned hooklinks, like Ultra Skin, are ideal for tying blowback rigs – but opt for the 25lb BS version.

3. The first job is to strip back a 10cm portion of the Ultra Skin – use a stripper tool or your teeth to do this.

4. Next, tie a small Overhand Loop knot at the end of this supple section – this will form the Hair.

5. Now attach a small rig ring. The position of the ring sets the length of the Hair on the finished rig.

6. Looping the ring on keeps it better alignment, but it is much easier to tie it on with a Granny Knot.

7. If you loop the ring on, this is how it should look. It just sits so much straight when the rig’s finished.

8. Use the Knotless Knot to attach your chosen long shank, positioning the rig ring opposite the barb.

9. Next, using a baiting needle, thread a small Gardner Covert Hook Aligner onto the hooklink like so.

10. Push the wide end over the hook eye so the slight curve is in alignment with the hook point.

11. And here’s how the hook section of the rig should look: neat, precise and ready to grab hold!

12. Here’s another angle of how the finished hooking arrangement should look. It really is deadly.

13. For quick attachment to quick-change swivels, tie a Figure-Of-Eight-Loop Knot at the end of the rig.

14. The complete rig. Whilst it works brilliantly with a single hookbait, try a double – no’s doing it!
