The Reverse Combi Link Rig
Little edges to keep your catch-rates rising

This new set-up I’ve started using is basically a combi link but reversed so the stiff filament (Atomic Chod Wire) is tied to the hook, creating the ‘D’ that holds the hookbait. It’s then matched to a length of coated braid (Atomic Jelly Wire) of the same length, attached via a ring in between. To make the braided section suppler, I’ve stripped the coating back from the middle, pulling one side towards the joining ring and the other towards the ring swivel that sits in the lead clip.

The mechanics of it are simple: the size 4 Chod hook, because of the slightly out-turned eye, kicks the hook so it catches on the way out of the fish’s mouth. The stiff filament means there’s no way the hook can move around – it goes in bend-first, it exit with the point catching the lip. The supple braided section just allows this movement in and out.

It could be fished with a bottom bait – ultimately this is a rig designed for bottom bait fishing – but I think it works better with a balanced pop-up. Basically, the hook should sit flat on the bottom and the bait should sit directly above. However, with a pop-up that is just allowed to lift up on its own accord will waft too much; you need it to sit closer to the hook with neutral buoyancy, which is where a shot comes into play. I tie my baits on and as I tie the bait onto the ring, I pinch on a BB shot to the floss, which is then pressed into the pop-up; this helps the bait sit closer to the hook. The 15mm bait is trimmed somewhat to help it gain something near to neutral buoyancy.
