Hook Lengths can be used in various lengths. is there a deciding factor which governs this choice :?: .
we all use long hook lengths, short medium when carp fishing .
but where do shorted , medium , longer hook lengths, have their uses in Carp fishing in your mind . or is it one fixed length for all your carp fishing.cheers for the replies. :up

Generally speaking my rigs are VERY short...I tend to start on a 4" rig, then increase if fishing in silt to around 10"

I've kept mine at 5" ish... Although mainly because the lake bed at my club lake is't exactly silty at the moment, i may lengthen them for the winter when it does get a bit worse.
And i think for the social on the gravel i may play about with a 4" or even 3" just to see what happens.

I used to use 7-8" but i found 5" gives me more positive takes for some reason. Go figure.

Vaguely- 9" over light weed and silt, 6 over hard bottom, 4" for bag work. 8)

Various lengths for me, depending on what situation I`m fishing to, on any lake.

Main priority lake:
18" braid hooklink, 3" of which was popped up in November.
10" braid hooklink (KD style) in April.

I state the month because even in winter, weed is very evident........namely silkweed over silt.
So for me, I fish a rig that suits the spot I`m fishing on.

Hinge stiff rig is my fav, but not suited to where I fish :|

I say that, but i 've been doing some tests in recent weeks with my rigs, casting them out and walking out to them . I was using the 4" rig and using a anti- tangle sleeve so it efeectively is only 2.8 inch... And i will never use the sleeves again with rigs that short....

The slightest bit of soft ground and the sleeve pushes the rig up.. So effectively im only fishing a 1" rig with a kink in it..

I need to change the rigs... Back to the KD i think..Had so many good results on it. then stopped using it as i was sick of the hair tangling around the shank and the hook coming back on itself

I've recently changed back to the kd style, i like it a lot. I use a small pva mesh bag of Krusha'd boilies every time on the cast as well, it's been working really well.

Due to the weed in my water I tend to fish very short rigs around the 3 or 4" mark for bottom baits and particles and for pop ups I use a stiff combi rig, the stiff link is about 4" and the supple braid is popped up about 1 1/2" to 2", most if not all the lake bed is made up of rock but there are some area's of light silt and chod and I have found that the shorter hook links work just as well as a longer link even in the light slit as the fish in my local love to root around and a bait that is a little hidden in the slit will still be rooted out.Normally only use 1 style of rig which is a blow back rig even when fishing the stiff combi link on pop ups but recently I have been using the KD rig for my pop ups / CB baits with a shot n the hair for pop ups and a cork plug in the bait for the CB baits which seems to be working very well Jamie

D'ya know...... I rarely bother.... if they're having it... they're having it... I often tie a hook to the mainline and freeline a bait... does that mean I'm using a 300 meter hooklink :o :P
