May 07 – One of the six in a night after getting on the new bait.
The Bait Issue
“Does it smell good?” “Has it got a good reputation?” and “do the batteries on your buzzers run out quick?” have been my usual questions when it comes to picking a bait. The chaps in the office assured me for months that there’s more to bait than, “if it catches for him, then it’s good enough for me.” Sadly for months I couldn’t see it, then I spent the evening with some proper bait geeks…
Next trip out, loaded with an ‘completely over the top amount of bait for a 20hr session’ I set about introducing my newfound bait thanks to DT Baits. 20hrs later, I’d had seven bites, landed six, used 8kgs of boilies, ran out of bait and best of all, they were crapping it out – big time! As you’ve probably guessed, my views on bait then changed somewhat.
So, are you like a ‘previous me’? Not convinced? If you are, then you’ll love us because we’ve dedicated this issue to the mysterious art of ‘carp food’. Having asked Andy Fisher, “why do some colours work better than others at different times of the day” (the results on page 52), we then took things a step further with Allan Parbery talking about sizes (P62), posed some bait queries to the chaps in The Rotary Letter (P67) and finally we come to the Keith “the man has probably forgotten more about bait than we’ll ever known.” Sykes (P82). It’ll blow your balls off!
On top of that mountain of bait goodness, we’ve got Jon McAllister back talking about bloodworm and his clever new Stick Rig, Iain Macmillan attempting to catch a 60lb common carp for just a pound and Joe Morgan tries to catch a thirty using just a tub of pop-ups.
Read, learn, get lucky, and when you’ve finished the mag, log on to the all-new carpology.net – you’ll love it!

Keith Sykes tried to impress us with his 12-metre pole. We were more impressed with the fact he caught a 1lb perch. Love the camo tape, Sykesie!
