October 07

It was pointed out to me the other day that Toffee Publications Ltd (the publishers of CARPology) is four-years-old this month. Bizarre really, because it only seems like “the other day” that we set it up.
From humble beginnings (a crappy Mac that we blagged, an office the size of a shoebox, and a mere ten grand (the first print bill was 8k!), but most importantly, a helluva lot of passion), we’ve achieved quite a bit really. WHSmith’s, Tesco’s, 4,000 other newsagents and sales almost peeking at 10,000 copies a month at times.
And perhaps all of that seems like I’m blowing smoke up our rear ends, but the point I’m trying to make is: you get out what you put in. This was proved to me during my five-day trip to Redmire Pool with my good friend Li’l Nige.
We’ll gloss over all that stuff about him catching a 50lb common and ten thirties last year. The fact is, during his five days at the ’mere, Nige had 18 bites. 18 bites thanks to sheer hard work. He stood for hours on end trying to tempt one off the top (which I hasten to add he had five), and then worked his “bottom bait swim” to utter perfection. All of this of course was captured on tape and film and you can read all about it on page 80.
And because we’re four-years-old now, we’ve lined-up a complete magazine to “improve-what-carp-anglers-read-so-they-catch-more”, by going that extra mile. We’ve improved the BREAKdown (P111) section by actually telling you HOW to use the item(s), not just what they do. And then of course we’ve got the first samples of the new Korda kit for you to all see – and win on the next page.
Next we wanted to bring you the very best in bait, tactics and rigs, and from some of the best in the game – in this case – Jed Kent – the chap who we believe will be the next Terry Hearn on page 24. You can also throw in Technical Know-How (P44), Kenny Dorsett (P38), The Rotary Letter (P51), Keith Sykes (P56), and another 60 odd pages of the finest carp reading matter available.
Now get on and read Sharpy’s article and stop panicking about how you’re going to catch from an ultra pressured lake, will you?
