Ed’s Piece October 2008

Flicking through pervious issues of CARPology and other publishers titles, it struck me that many of their/our stand-out features seem to advocate the use of a yellow pop-up to get a quick bite. I too have had my fair share of fish on the “yellow b******s” as Ali Hamidi calls them, as has many of the “pro’s”. Take Nigel Sharp for example. Look in his bait bag (it’s unlikely he’ll let you, so just take my word) and you’ll see a selection of DT’s finest pineapple flavour all wrapped up in a bright yellow dye. They catch: fact. But is the success down to the colour or is it simply because the largest percentage of us use them over other colours?
We wanted to know whether we were using out on something. Would an orange be better over gravel or silt? Does white work better than a yellow in depths over 15ft? Is pink better in coloured water? But how could we get the answers? By commissioning Rob Hughes to don his diving gear again for another instalment of Below The Surface. It’s a brilliant feature that proves other colours will out-catch yellow and you’ll find it on page 28.
Elsewhere, Mike Willmott starts his exclusive two-parter – Piecing It All Together (P42) – whilst in The Rotary Letter (P63) Jed Kent talks us through his incredibly clever development with the Chod Rig. Genius in fact.
And finally, Sharpy (P57) talks about “keeping on a roll”, Joe Morgan tries to stalk a couple out of Ricketts Mere (P34), James Anderson gives Carp Company’s boiled food a test in Tank Tests (P74) and we bankside test Nashy’s new Pathfinder GT Barrow (P10). It’s a beast.

            Enjoy the issue.
