How to make spod mix boilies step-by-step

Put away the throwing stick and dust off your spod rod: we’ve got the perfect hookbait to match that carp-adoring spod mix…

Over the last few months we’ve taken a close look at how we can customise your hookbaits, but this month we’re going to show you how you can apply one or two little difference or ‘edges’ to your actual freebies.

First off there is one very important thing to consider – and that is the flavour balance and palatability of your feed. This is far more delicate than a hookbait, which is never intended to be eaten, meaning flavour labels can be random and often very high as ‘attraction’ is the most important element. Here though, because none of us want to be sitting behind the rods in any doubt, we won’t be making any changes to the boilie make-up flavour-wise; instead we’ll be making distinct changes to the appearance and texture.

Perhaps the best edge gained from this simple process is the increased leakage of attraction and ‘food signal’; perfect for the summer months when the fish can be moody, preferring to just cruise about making it difficult to encourage a feeding response.

Right then, here’s how you make our Spod Mix Boilies…

The recipe...

Production time Approximately 90 minutes
Ingredients 10ml Hybrid Activator per two eggs and Hybrid Dedicated Base Mix
Equipment Mixing bowl, measuring syringe or pipette, fork, spoon(s), saucepan and sieve or strainer
Ready-to-use in... Immediately

How to make them...

Break two or four eggs into a bowl followed by the ‘active’ ingredients included in the Activator liquid – 10ml per two eggs.

Now add the Hybrid Dedicated Base Mix a little at a time, mixing with a fork until it thickens and you need to use your hands.

Slowly build up a pliable paste like this – a finished paste that’s not too wet and sticky but also not too dry and crumbly is perfect.

Roll the paste into sausages next – make some thin (10mm diameter) some wider - the more random the diameters the better.

Keep a pinch of paste back for some ‘barrel-like’ hookbaits like this and an option to match the freebies, as you’ll see later.

Boil some of the sausages whole for 90 seconds (also allow some to simply dry hard for a different breakdown rate).

Boil the hookbaits for two minutes and then leave everything on a dry towel or wire tray/rack to air-dry until firm.

Break the sausages into pieces to create baits that have a skin around the middle but are more paste like at each end.

And there you go! Spod mix boilies that offer dramatically increased leakage and attraction! Give them a go - it’s your summer edge!
