The reel deal

On the lookout for a set of reels packed with features, extras and look super-cool without a hefty price tag? Then we suggest you checkout the new Affinity 8000 LTD from Penn

From Tetley Tea and HP Sauce to BMW and Rolls Royce, having an extensive history of producing something normally means it’s going to be bloody good. History (82-years of history to be exact in Penn’s case) breeds knowledge, and an understanding that in-turn creates functionality and performance within your products. In terms of fishing reels, when you bundle all those things together you’re left with one thing: the new Affinity 8000 Big-Pit reel from Penn.

The big questions

Big-pit reels: every time I hear those words it normally means buying a trillion, million miles of line as well, right?
Well, big pit style reels are generally designed for long-range work and/or to aid casting big distances, so in many cases, hold a deep spool to harbour a shedload of line. This isn’t really the case with the Affinity, as its spools hold 375m of 15lb monofilament line – the optimum level for fishing at range without going down to the knot or having to hold wasted, excess line. Most 1/4oz bulk spools of line will easily fill a couple of reels.

That’s sounds okay, but didn’t you just say ‘spools’? I’m guessing there’s more than one then?
You did hear us correctly. Yes, the Affinity 8000 comes with its own spare spool, matching the size, colour and spec of the one on the reel: 375m/410yds of 40mm/15lb line, forged black aluminium and tapered for improved casting performance.

You mentioned something about casting further before – how will this reel help?
Thanks to the longer, tapered-shaped spools Penn have equipped it with, and these will create less coil and memory in the line and will allow it to leave the reel much easier. And this in-turn creates a smoother, longer cast. Equally important is the gear ratio, 4.3:1 for the Affinity 8000, which basically means you’re not cranking away for hours to get your lead back to the bank after you’ve just made that Mark Hutchinson equivalent cast. The Affinity also incorporates a ‘slow-oscillation’ retrieve which creates a perfect line lay on the spool that again will improve the smoothness when casting. Add the fact the reel comes with a comfortable wooden grip handle and it’s a pleasure to both cast and reel back.

Wooden handles? Erm… I’m not into old school?
Well yes, okay, wooden handles aren’t everyone’s cup of tea (we really like them) and Penn have thought of that and kindly provided a spare handle with a soft-touch rubber grip. Simply loosen the thread cap on the opposite side of the reel to the handle, unwind and you can change handles in seconds.

Spare spool, spare handle – I’m liking the sound of this. What other features can I expect?
A heap! How does a ‘quick-drag’ adjustment system which incorporates a carbon matrix material for smooth drag settings grab you? This sits on a titanium shaft fitted with a graphite body that provides what is essentially a pretty large reel with a lightweight feel (just 730-grams). The emphasis on a smooth operation then continues with strategically placed stainless steel ball bearings (8+1) and automatic bail arm with rotor brake system. The bail arm and spool are jet black with the body coloured a matt carbon black. So you’re getting all these features fitted within a super-smart looking reel with discreet, low-key graphics.

Yep, you’ve got me excited, but I bet I won’t be so excited about the price – go on, how much? £200… £300… more?
Nope, amazingly the Penn Affinity 8000 LTD retails for just £149.99 and is on-sale right now.

Wow! I love the reel and price!
