Head-to-head: Main lines

Ready to ditch that line which you batted last summer and left to rot away in the shed over the winter? Here are two of the very best lines currently on the market: the hardest decision you now have to make is which one best suits you…

Gardner GT80+

BEST FOR: Anglers wanting an all-round, but particularly good sinking and casting line

The key to Gardner’s next generation GT80+ is both its sinkability and castability. Treated with a sinking additive and conditioner ensure it hangs limp off the rod tip, and whilst both this and their GT-HD are both exceptional casting lines, GT80+ does have the edge on out-and-out distance according to long-range supremo, Terry Edmonds. Plus, being a sibling of the original GT80, it goes without saying this is one of the most robust, highest abrasion resistant main lines going. Available in 10, 12 and 15lb BS.

Gardner GT-HD

BEST FOR: Those wanting minimum stretch and maximum feel

The smooth finish and supple feel doesn’t just offer improved casting performance. This new formulation of copolymer mix also proved the GT-HD to have approximately 20% lower stretch when tested against equally pitched lines on the market. And it gets better. Described as being a missing bridge between fluorocarbon and normal copolymer lines, GT-HD is exceptionally heavy, which when combined with the minimum stretch factor, gives you a line which not only enhances feedback to the rod tip when feeling the lead down, but also improves indication at long-range. Available in 12, 15 and 18lb BS.
