The Motorway Pond

One of the north's premium big fish waters, that may not be a runs water, but can throw up a fish or two per session is you fish it right

This lovely, mature and snaggy venue is an awesome place to spend your angling time. The scenery is lovely and the lake just screams carp. The venue produced the Yorkshire record back in 1999 with a fish that weighed in at 42lb 8oz. Over the years the fish have grown and grown in the 16-acre lake and now it contains a staggering head of big carp. It holds a total of 120 carp with the majority of them weighing in at over 20lb. To top this off, it also holds three thirties. The fish are real stunners too and they all give a good account for themselves when hooked.

The lake has loads of very carpy features with an abundance of different bays, points, islands, snaggy margins, gravel bars and plateaux. Motorway has everything for carp anglers to simply lose themselves in and although it’s no runs water, if you can find the carp and they want to feed you can often get several fish in a session. Watercraft skills are something you will need to locate the fish in the venue, and a barrow makes life a lot easier.

Smiler.

The lake has had a toilet block built for the anglers to use and the car parking is excellent allowing you to park at several different locations around the lake to make your life a lot easier when finding a swim. The town of Newport is only a very short walk from the lake, so you can easily go into town to stock up on supplies. The town boasts takeaways, supermarkets and newsagents and all of these facilities combined make for a very enjoyable stay whilst you are chasing some of the monsters that are present in the lake.

When it comes to membership, firstly you will need to pay a £10 joining fee and then if you would like a days-only ticket that will cost you £40 for the year. If you would like a night permit you will need to get your name on the waiting list. The turnover on the list is very good so you could end up with a ticket within a few years. The cost of it will be £200.

This is a superb water in lovely mature and carpy surroundings with an awesome head of fish in it. So if you are chomping at the bit get down there!
