How to improve your single hookbait presentation

Could you give me some tips on single hookbait fishing for this coming winter? Iain Storm

Wayne Rees says: “Fishing single hookbaits during the winter is a deadly approach. I feel that the presentation of the hookbait is critical in the application. I generally use a fluorocarbon hooklink such as the Gardner Subterfuge Super Soft. During the winter months it is common for the water within the lakes to clear due to fewer hours of sunlight, this results in a reduction of algae and an increase in water clarity. Using a fluorocarbon hooklink allows a bait to be presented without the hooklink being detected. A super sharp hook will increase your chances of a capture with the Gardner Covert Mugga a personal favourite of mine. With the Gardner Covert hook range providing improved camouflage, this increases the chances of a bite.

“When fishing single hookbaits during the winter months, leaf litter will not have broken down so fishing a pop-up rig will keep the rig presented above the leaf litter stopping the hookbait becoming concealed or the hook point masked. When fishing single hookbaits, look for warmer areas of the lake, within this area recast every few hours using the lightest lead possible for the cast. Stealth when winter fishing is another major factor which can significantly increase your catch results and setting traps with minimal disturbance can really pay dividends.”
