Fishing Family's Fight Against Cancer Continues

For the last 12 years, the family have been raising funds in aid of Cancer Research UK, and here's how you can help

The Palmer family consisting of Ian (52), his wife Vicki (44) and their 2 sons Callum (21) and Nathan (20) for the last 12 years have been raising funds in aid of Cancer Research UK, in the form of a 48hr Carp fishing match, aptly named Cast-4-life.

Ian and Nathan are keen carp fisherman and find what time they can to be on the bank of a lake fishing. Nathan has been fishing since he was about 7 years old and hopes to one day take over the running and organising of Cast-4-life from his parents. Vicki also fishes but is also happy doing other things whilst their oldest son Callum isn’t into the fishing scene at all. It is this love of fishing and the families’ dealings with Cancer that Cast-4-life was born back in 2012.

Ian is a Cancer survivor having had Hodgkins Lymphoma twice, but it was the news that his sister, Debbie Wilson’s breast cancer had returned but was terminal in 2012 that drove Ian to want to do more.

Both families have been affected by Cancer in some way. Vicki, herself has had a cancer scare and has lost 2 grandparents, an uncle and a close friend and has another uncle who survived, whilst Ian has survived it along with his mum, and one of his brothers but has also lost his sister, aunt and some friends to Cancer. This makes them both passionate about doing what they can to support Cancer Research UK.

Cast-4-life is a 48hr Carp fishing match, the anglers taking part get sponsored by their friends and families to take part in the match, and as with any match there are trophies up for grabs which include overall winning pair, biggest single fish and a recent newcomer, the smallest fish.

Originally in 2012 it was just 6 of them fishing and for 24hrs but over the years Cast-4-life has grown into what can only be described as an extended family with many of the same anglers fishing every match and this year is no different. For this match there are 32 anglers taking part.

During the match, the anglers have a 5hr social time on Saturday. This is done to allow the anglers time to socialise with each other, but it is also when the other bits that make up Cast-4-life happen. This includes a raffle, auction, 2 tombola’s and for the first time this year there is face painting for the kiddies provided by Sabrina @ Beanies Face Paints and a new game called Hook a Fish.

The match kicks off on Friday 19th April and runs until Sunday 21st April, and is being held at Willow Park Fishery, Ash, Aldershot, GU12 6RE. Raffles, auction etc will be running from 12pm Saturday 20th April. Ian and Vicki would love to welcome you on the Saturday, it is free to come and show your support and why not have a go on the games or buy a cake from the event. All profits go to Cancer Research UK. There are prizes on the raffles etc that suit everyone and not just fisherman.
