How to make this September even better

Keith Williams reveals five steps to put you on the right track for an alarm screaming month

Step 1

“First things first, and I’ll start the month by taking a good look at the weather forecasts to decide how I am going to tackle a venue, with particular interest paid to the air pressure and the wind direction. Temperatures can also be the key as to how I approach the carp and the tactics I will plan to use at this time of year.”

Step 2

“The day before my session I’ll always take the boilies I am going to use out of the freezer and place them into an ‘air-dry bag’. Some hookbaits are placed into a glug pot, so they are ready to go if I want to use a glugged bait and I’ll also make sure that my spod mix is pre-mixed and ready for the session.”

Step 3

“Upon arriving at the fishery I’ll take a walk around carrying a bucket, a catapult and some boilies. As I love to fish the margins, and would expect the carp to feel the same, I will check all corners of the lake and marginal areas in order to choose the right spots. Of course this must be done with stealth.”

Step 4

“Once I’ve chosen a swim the stealth-mode will continue and I’ll set-up at the back of the swim in order to avoid disturbing the fish that I will be encouraging into the margins and my baited spots. Also, if other anglers come into the peg, by keeping all movement to the rear of the swim, you’ll again prevent the fish from being spooked.”

Step 5

“In the margin that I have chosen to target I’ll not rush to position some hookbaits, until I am confident that the carp are feeding well. Instead I will regularly add hemp, chopped boilies and sweetcorn whilst carefully observing the area, ahead of introducing my rigs when the carp are really up for it and a bite is on the cards!”
