Nigel Sharp on the Multi Rig

There have been many methods and tactics used over the decades, but here’s Nigel Sharp’s top ten which have seemingly dominated the big carp scene for the past 20 years - next up, the Multi Rig.

Dominance started: 2007
Influential anglers: Mike Kavanagh and Jon McAllister
PB using rig: 25lb 4oz

Being a good friend of Jon Mac, I know only too well how to tie it and by looking at his photo album, how effective it is. Mind you, in fairness to Jon, it’s not just this rig that catches his fish, his watercraft is exceptional. Anyway, back to the presentation.

I can see how it works, and like the 360ş and Hinge rigs, it has pretty much the same mechanics when baited with a pop-up, so again I see no real point in me using it over a Hinge Rig. However, I have used the presentation with a bottom bait whilst over in France. It was during a trip with CARPology’s editor, Joe, and true to form I caught loads but no big ‘uns. Joe, however, remained consistent with the French brutes and landed them up to 47lb along with a dirty great big sturgeon. All of our fish fell to bottom baits on Multi Rigs and the hook holds were incredible.

As I write this, I’m realising I never used it since. Doh! Why do we do that, eh? Use something once, do well and never use it again?
